Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a channel that hosts videos, commentaries and analysis of how popular culture depicts women. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit website that focuses on gender representation in popular cultural narratives is founded and is directed by Sarkeesian. In her efforts to dispel the myths that are associated with females in pop culture, she works to highlight issues related to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet environment. Sarkeesian, who holds the degree of Master's in the field of Social and Political Thought from York University, is a popular public speakers. She has given speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. She was fascinated by the gender issue and feminist movements at a young age. In 2009, when she was continuing to study at the university level she started the Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to start a web-based series on gender-based representations in video games. However, she found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. She was not deterred by the assault, in fact it only reinforced her drive to become a media critic and feminist. She is a recipient of many awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit explores the portrayals of women in contemporary pop culture.
